Description
by Poland and Haaren,
with five new chapters by Rob Shearer
edited and updated by Rob and Cyndy Shearer
The stories begin with the tales of the Germanic chiefs who defeated the Romans: Alaric, Genseric, and Theodoric. Then come stories of the famous kings of the Franks: Clovis, Charles Martel, and Charlemagne. The second half of the book includes chapters on Justinian, Mohammed, Harun-Al-Rashid, El Cid, William the Conqueror, Frederick Barbarossa, Tamerlane, Marco Polo, and Joan of Arc. The stories of many of these figures can’t be found for children anywhere else. Don’t just show children pictures of castles; let them read the stories of those who built them and lived in them.
Exclusive to the Greenleaf Press version of this classic – Five new chapters written by Rob Shearer:
Chapter II Augustine of Hippo
Chapter IV Patrick of Ireland
Chapter IX Benedict and Gregory
Chapter XXII Pope Gregory VII and Emperor Henry IV
Chapter XXVI Francis and Dominic
Also, the chapter on Warwick the Kingmaker has been substantially rewritten in order to make it clearer (the War of the Roses can be confusing!).
Note: Although other editions may have copied these chapter titles (and borrowed heavily from the text of what Rob wrote), only the Greenleaf Press editions have the original chapters written by Rob Shearer in 1992 and 2007.
