Famous Men of the 16th & 17th Century

Famous Men of the 16th & 17th Century

by Robert G. Shearer

The 17th century was an age of religious wars and revolutions. The French had seven civil wars of religion from 1570-1590. The German Empire had a religious civil war from 1618-1648. The English had a civil war from 1642-1649.

It was also the century in which the English and French settlements were founding in North America at Jamestown, Plymouth, Boston, & Quebec.

But learning the wars will not convey to students what the times were like. Biographies will.

This volume includes 28 biographies from Queen Elizabeth I (who came to the throne in 1560) through King Louis XIV who died in 1715.

Written by historian, author, and homeschooling dad – Rob Shearer.

This volume is a worthy successor to the previous books in the Famous Men of. . . series.

Famous Men of the Renaissance and Reformation

Famous Men of the Renaissance & Reformation

by Robert G. Shearer

The Renaissance and the Reformation are pivotal periods in both Church History, Western History, and World History.

The Renaissance was the beginning of the modern world. Its leading thinkers were the first to recognize that there was now a huge gap between themselves and the ancient nations of Greece and Rome, and that civilization had been through a “dark age.” The Renaissance revered Greece and Rome and sought to recover the ancient languages, literature, art, and in some cases also their pagan religion.

The Reformation, too, was a modern movement in which theologians and Christian thinkers became aware of the large differences between the late medieval church and the early church and the teachings of Christ in the Bible. The towering figure of Martin Luther dominates the Reformation. He mastered the literature and language skills of the Renaissance humanists, and became convinced that the church was desperately in need of reform. The printing press spread his ideas rapidly and he miraculously avoided the martyrdom that Jon Hus had undergone when he called for reform a century earlier. Pope Benedict XVI himself has now initiated a re-evaluation of Martin Luther and acknowledged that many of the reforms he called for were later adopted by the Roman Church.

Drawing on 30 years of reading in Renaissance & Reformation history, I have selected 15 figures from the Renaissance and 15 from the Reformation whose lives illustrate the history of the times.
From the Renaissance: Petrarch, Giotto, Brunelleschi, Donatello, Cosimo de’ Medici, Lorenzo de’ Medici, Savonarola, Botticeli, da Vinci, Michelangelo, Cesare Borgia, Machiavelli, Pope Leo X, and Erasmus.
From the Reformation: Wyclif, Hus, Luther, Charles V, Durer, Zwingli, Muntzer, Grebel & Sattler, Menno Simons, Henry VIII, Thomas More, Tyndale, Cromwell & Cranmer, Calvin, and Knox.

The biographies are written so that they can be profitably read by an upper elementary student as well as any high school student. Reading through these biographies will give you a broad introduction to both the Renaissance and Reformation and help you to understand how the events of that time continue to shape our world today.

Famous Men of the Middle Ages

by Poland and Haaren,
with five new chapters by Rob Shearer
edited and updated by Rob and Cyndy Shearer
The stories begin with the tales of the Germanic chiefs who defeated the Romans: Alaric, Genseric, and Theodoric. Then come stories of the famous kings of the Franks: Clovis, Charles Martel, and Charlemagne. The second half of the book includes chapters on Justinian, Mohammed, Harun-Al-Rashid, El Cid, William the Conqueror, Frederick Barbarossa, Tamerlane, Marco Polo, and Joan of Arc. The stories of many of these figures can’t be found for children anywhere else. Don’t just show children pictures of castles; let them read the stories of those who built them and lived in them.

Exclusive to the Greenleaf Press version of this classic – Five new chapters written by Rob Shearer:
Chapter II Augustine of Hippo
Chapter IV Patrick of Ireland
Chapter IX Benedict and Gregory
Chapter XXII Pope Gregory VII and Emperor Henry IV
Chapter XXVI Francis and Dominic

Also, the chapter on Warwick the Kingmaker has been substantially rewritten in order to make it clearer (the War of the Roses can be confusing!).

Note: Although other editions may have copied these chapter titles (and borrowed heavily from the text of what Rob wrote), only the Greenleaf Press editions have the original chapters written by Rob Shearer in 1992 and 2007.

Famous Men of Greece

Famous Men of Greece

by Poland & Haaren,
edited and updated by Rob and Cyndy Shearer

The history of Greece is taught chronologically, as students read short biographical sketches outlining the lives of important figures.

The selections begin with the Greek creation and flood stories, then continue with legendary figures like Perseus, Hercules, and Jason. Then come the leaders of the Trojan War: Agamemnon, Achilles, & Odysseus. The lawgivers of the Greek cities (Lycurgus, Draco, & Solon) are profiled and the leaders who led the defense of Greece against the Persian invasion are covered (Miltiades, Leonidas, & Themistocles).

The second half of the book covers the Greek classical period (Pericles, Alcibiades, & Socrates) and finally, the age of Alexander the Great (Demosthenes, Aristotle, & Ptolemy).

Your fourth or fifth graders should be able to enjoy it independently, older students can read it as well and not feel like they have been given something that is “babyish.”

The text includes a new preface by Rob & Cyndy Shearer, as well as an essay for Christian parents titled, “What to do about Mythology?”
Note: The Greenleaf Press edition is NOT identical to the 1904 edition, or to the editions reprinted by other publishers. It has been edited, updated, and supplemented with additional material, including a large number of new, classical illustrations.

Famous Men of Rome

Famous Men of Rome
by Poland and Haaren, edited and updated by Rob and Cyndy Shearer

Famous Men of Rome contains 29 chapters. Each chapter is a short biographical sketch of a famous Roman. The chapters are arranged chronologically. The original edition had 28 chapters, but there is an additional chapter by Rob Shearer in the Greeenleaf edition, as well as over a hundred new illustrations.

The history of Rome is taught chronologically as students read short biographical sketches. As in Famous Men of Greece, your fourth or fifth graders will be able to read this on their own. Younger students will enjoy hearing it read out loud. Older students will find it to be an exciting easy introduction to Ancient Rome.

A companion book, The Greenleaf Guide to Famous Men of Rome will give you vocabulary, background, and discussion questions to help make this a successful study for any age student.
